Bringing a global public art initiative to Boston.
In 2019, we discovered an international mural initiative that had just made a big splash in Indonesia. Through HarborArts, we brought Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans to Boston in 2020 and 2021 with PangeaSeed, support from Linda Cabot, and the New England Aquarium joining as conservation partner in 2021. We organized both Boston editions of PangeaSeed’s international mural festival from the ground up.
We found walls, funding, coordinated city approvals, organized equipment and schedules (huge thanks to BRM Production Management for their support in 2021), co-curated the artist roster, secured critical partnerships, and supported artists throughout production. Seven murals in 2020 grew by another fourteen new works in 2021, totaling 21 murals, including Shepard Fairey’s Aquarium mural, featured by WBUR.
The mission of Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans is to make ocean conservation visible and personal. Artists connected rising seas, pollution and environmental justice with local stories, as WBUR explored in its 2020 coverage.
With the New England Aquarium, Boston Harbor Now, Eastie Week, and many other partners, we brought the larger community into the festival through youth programming, talks, tours and film. We put the pieces together so artists could make their work and the neighborhood could be part of it.
